Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about faculty recruitment at MRC

Can international researchers apply for faculty positions at MRC/IISc?

Yes. IISc actively encourages applications from international candidates. IISc faculty are required to be Indian citizens or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO/OCI). Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are also eligible. Long-term visa and OCI arrangements are supported through the IISc HR office.

What is the minimum qualification for an Assistant Professor position?

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience. An outstanding publication record and an independent research vision are essential.

Is there startup funding available for new faculty?

Yes. MRC provides access to existing shared central facilities, and IISc's SRIC (Society for Innovation and Research) provides new faculty startup grants. Additionally, DST-SERB, DRDO, and other national funding agencies offer first-year PI grants specifically for new academic recruitments.

How long does the selection process typically take?

The full process — from application deadline to receiving an official offer letter — typically takes 3 to 6 months, depending on the applicant pool and scheduling of campus visits.

Can I apply if there is no specific open position matching my area?

Absolutely. MRC accepts expressions of interest from exceptional researchers year-round. We especially welcome candidates in emerging areas of materials science. Please email your CV and a brief research summary to office.mrc@iisc.ac.in.
