Degree Program

The admission procedure for both programs consists of two steps.

  • Step 1: Candidates are required to appear for the IISc entrance exam.
  • Step 2: Based on the performance in the entrance test, short listed candidates will be invited for an interview. During the interview, performance in other exams such as CSIR will be taken into account as well.
  • Exception: The only exception is made for candidates with a ME degree, admission to ME having been obtained after clearing the GATE exam, who are directly eligible for the interview step.

More about the Degree Programs

  • Integrated Ph. D.: Students with a bachelor’s degree in physics or chemistry can enroll in the integrated Ph. D. program in the various basic science departments. Students get an MS degree after 3 years, following completion of the required course credits in the department they are registered in and defending a thesis based on 10 credits of research work. The research towards the MS thesis can be performed under the guidance of a MRC faculty member. The students can then continue with the same topic for a Ph. D.
  • Ph. D.: Students who either have a masters degree from a recognized university or IISc in materials science and/or engineering, metallurgy, ceramics, mechanical, electrical, electronics or chemical engineering can enroll in the Ph. D. program. Students enrolled in the Ph. D. program are required to do 12 credits of course work. Currently Ph. D. are supported by a monthly stipend of INR 16000 for the first two years and INR 18000 for three years after that, on completion of the comprehensive exam. At the end of approximately 5 years students are expected to summarize their research in a thesis which they defend at a colloquium followed by submission of the thesis for review within 3 months. The thesis is reviewed by two examiners, one from within India and one from abroad. Following receipt of reviews the student then defends his thesis which constitutes the final academic step prior to receiving the degree.
